Papertrey Ink Make It Monday Challenge # 173 : No Outline Watercolour - Friend Card.

Hello again! This is my second post today as I have made another card for the Papertrey Ink Make It Monday challenge - see all the details here http://nicholeheady.typepad.com/capture_the_moment/2014/07/make-it-monday-173-no-outline-watercolor.html.

Please click on the photo above for an enlarged view.
My second card also uses the "Friends 'til the end" stamp set, rustic look card and second generation stamping with Smokey Shadow ink. Again I used a number of masks to give the illusion of depth. This time I used New Leaf ink to watercolour the leaves and Orange Zest, Canyon Clay and Terracotta Tile inks for the flowers. I went around the flower arrangement with a very light wash of Fine Linen ink and stamped the sentiment (also from "Friends 'til the end") with Smokey Shadow ink. The final touch was the addition of some orange and lime green twine (True Hemp crafter's cord) to the spine of my card.
I am really happy with how this turned out! Thanks for looking!

Papertrey Ink Make It Monday Challenge # 173 : No Outline Watercolour - Sympathy Card.

This week's challenge at the Papertrey Ink blog saw Heather Nichols demonstrating how to obtain a beautiful watercoloured card without the stamping showing too much. You can check out Heather's lovely card here http://nicholeheady.typepad.com/capture_the_moment/2014/07/make-it-monday-173-no-outline-watercolor.html .

I used the lovely "Friends 'til the end" stamp set, some rustic looking cardstock and a smokey shadow PTI inkpad. This ink was still a bit too dark for this technique, so I used second generation stamping to achieve a lighter look. I made masks for several of the stamps to gain depth as I was stamping. I dabbed some inkpads onto an acrylic block and spritzed with water before using a waterbrush to watercolour the image. I chose to use Spring Moss and Ripe Avocado for the leaves and Plum Pudding and Royal Velvet for the flowers. I went around the outside of the floral arrangement with a very light wash of the Smokey Shadow ink and stamped the sentiment, from the Meadow Greens stamp set, using the same inkpad. Finally I added some purple twine (True Hemp crafters cord) around the spine of my card to complete it.

This was a fun technique to try and I ended up making another similar card in different colours as well - I'll be back later on to show that one.

Papertrey Ink Make It Monday challenge # 172: Rainbow Medallions.

Hello there! Sorry that I have been missing for a while, but I have been enjoying some quality time with my daughter who is home from University for the summer holidays.

This week on the Papertrey blog Dawn Mcvey has been stamping the same image with many ink colours to create rainbow medallions. You can check out her card and video here http://nicholeheady.typepad.com/capture_the_moment/2014/07/make-it-monday-172-rainbow-medallions.html .

I had a rummage through all of my Papertrey Ink stamps and settled on the pretty frame stamp from the "Boutique Borders: Love" small stamp set to make my card with.

Please click on images for a larger view.

I selected the same eight colours of ink that Dawn had used. From top left to bottom right - Pure Poppy, Summer Sunrise, Limeade Ice, Raspberry Fizz, New Leaf, Winter Wisteria, Blueberry Sky and Hawaiian Shores.

Using smooth white card I started to stamp the frame image in various colours, overlapping in the centre as shown.

I continued to stamp in this way, changing inkpads and rotating the card for each stamped image, as shown below.

This is how it looked after stamping six different coloured impressions and you can see how they all overlapped in the centre of the card.

The bottom layer complete. I then trimmed it down to fit onto a five and a half inch square black card blank.

The circular stamps that I have from PTI are all quite small and I decided that I wanted to cover a larger area in the centre of my stamped base layer, so I die cut an octagon shape from white card and repeated the different coloured stamping. This time I only inked up about half of the stamp so that I would get a crisp image all around the edges of the octagon.

Next I cut an even smaller octagon from the same white cardstock and this time just inked one end of the stamp before repeating the rainbow stamping. You can see the completed second and third stamped layers below. I cut slightly larger scalloped octagons from black card and used them to mat the two extra stamped octagons before layering them onto the card.

Finally I cut a tiny octagon from white card and used black dye ink to stamp the circular "just for you" phrase from the "Around and About Sentiments" stamp set. I also stamped the larger flower from the same set - just about managing to ink each of the eight petals with a different ink before I stamped it! This was also matted onto a small black scalloped octagon and added to the card. The final touch was the addition of a tiny black pearl to the centre of the flower and I was done!

I am so pleased with how this turned out and I shall certainly be on the look out for other stamps to use with this technique again.

Papertrey Ink Make it Monday # 159: No-Sew quilted cards (Part 2).

Welcome back to part two of my entries for the PTI Make It Monday challenge # 159!

Here my third card also used a 6" square kraft card blank and a slightly smaller square of the same kraft card. I added the patchwork paper squares as before and embossed the panel using the "Happy Hexagons" cover plate. I selected Scarlet Jewel ribbon and matching card to die cut a fancy label with the Boutique Borders Birthday die. The fancy flourishes and Thank You sentiment from the matching stamp set were stamped with Versamark ink and heat embossed using Zing "Blush" embossing powder. Once again the sentiment panel was added to the card front with foam pads.

Please see the next post for my final card in this series.

Papertrey Ink Make It Monday challenge # 140: Ink Pad Designs

Hello there! The Papertrey Ink Make it Monday challenge this time was to use ink pads direct to paper to make the main design for a card. I had a play with some of the small cube ink pads to start with, but wasn't happy with the results so I switched to using the larger curved ink pads. The shape of these reminded me of paisley designs - so that's what I tried to recreate here.

I took an A5 sheet of white card and used three ink pads (Aqua Mist, Hawaiian Shores and Ocean Tides) to "stamp" randomly all over the card. Then I took the smallest stamp from the "Lovely Layers" stamp set and stamped in between the paisley shapes using the same three ink colours. Four more stamps from the same Lovely Layers set were used to decorate the paisley shapes, again with the same inks but this time using the Fresh Snow hybrid ink pad as well. When I'd finished stamping I took a fine black pen and doodled around the edges of each shape to give a faux stitching / lace effect.

I decided that there was enough of my patterned card stock to make two slightly different cards. For the first card I trimmed a square and matted this onto a slightly larger square of Hawaiian Shores card stock, before layering this onto a white 6" x 6" card blank. I used True Black ink to stamp the words "it's your" from the "Wonderful Words: Birthday" stamp set into a gap at the right hand side. Then I die-cut the word "birthday" from Hawaiian Shores card stock, over stamped it with the matching stamp in the same colour ink and stuck it to the card using thin strips of foam tape for dimension.

For my second card I took the remaining patterned piece and joined it to a similar sized rectangle of Hawaiian Shores card stock before trimming it into a square shape. The join was covered with a length of Hawaiian Shores 3/8" twill tape to which I had tied a bow and then the whole piece was adhered to a 6" x 6" white card blank. I stamped the word "happy" from the Wonderful Words: Birthday stamp set using True Black ink then adhered the word "birthday" which I had die-cut from white card stock.

I must apologise for the quality of the photographs as they were taken when it was dark and don't really show off the colours very well. I was really pleased with the finished cards though and think that these designs in this colourway would be equally suitable for a man or a woman.

Papertrey Ink Make It Monday no 138: Inlaid Die-cuts.

I am joining in the Papertrey Ink Make It Monday challenge for the first time this week. Betsy Veldman has a great video tutorial here http://nicholeheady.typepad.com/capture_the_moment/2013/10/make-it-monday-138-insert-intro-paragraph-insert-video-insert-still-photos-if-you-are-joining-along-.html where she shows how to inlay die cuts to make cards which are easy to post. I was inspired to dig out my Papertrey stamps and dies and give the technique a try.

I chose the "Wonderful Words: Birthday" stamps and die, together with the small "friend" stamp from "Friends 'til the End" to make a colourful ombre style card.

I started by die cutting the birthday word out of four complementary colours of Papertrey Ink cardstock. I chose Aqua Mist, Spring Moss, Hawaiian Shores and Simply Chartreuse card and then stamped each word with the matching stamp in their corresponding ink colours. Then I took some smooth white card and die-cut the word birthday again four times, making sure that I lined them all up so that they were evenly spaced. The white words were removed and saved for another project then I turned over the card with the negative spaces and applied wide tape over the holes (I used normal packing tape for this). The card was then turned face up again and each hole was filled with one of the coloured words - starting with the lightest shade and the top and progressing to the darkest at the bottom. I had saved all the fiddly little insert pieces from the white card and painstakingly replaced them all inside the coloured words so that the background was entirely white. This took me ages but was well worth the effort I think, as the words really pop.

I used the matching ink pads to stamp the words "happy", "to you" and "friend" next to the inlaid die - cuts. The idea is that you sing the sentiment rather than read it as it's the words to the Happy Birthday song! I matted and layered the white card onto a rectangle of Hawaiian Shores cardstock and stuck that to a Limeade Ice card base. Finally I added sparkly rhinestones in four toning colours to add a little birthday bling!

This was a lovely technique to use - why don't you give it a try?
